Decay - Installation at the UBC FINA Gallery
'Decay’ Installation, 2023
Stone, Rebar, Copper Wire, Printed materials
During my time at the University of British Columbia, I had the opportunity to participate in several exhibitions at the FINA gallery on campus. One of the most significant was the group show "Misanthropocene," held in May 2023, which centered on the destructive impact of human activity on the natural world. This exhibition provided a platform for artists to explore the complex relationship between humanity and the environment, prompting reflections on our role in ecological degradation.
In my project, I focused on the idea of creating art from destruction as a means of coping with the overwhelming challenges posed by environmental change. The centerpiece of my installation was a displayed book that featured a variety of artworks crafted from decaying manmade materials, including metal, cut stone, plastic, and more. Each piece represented a different facet of decay, emphasizing the transient nature of these materials and the stories they hold.
Three books were placed on display, each at a distinct stage of decomposition, inviting viewers to engage with the artworks physically and conceptually. As visitors picked up each book, they could explore the evolving textures and forms, experiencing the gradual transition from initial vibrancy to eventual decay. This interactive element encouraged a deeper contemplation of impermanence and the cycles of life that exist within both natural and artificial realms.

The "Decay" installation not only highlighted the aesthetic beauty found in deterioration but also served as a poignant reminder of the consequences of our actions on the environment. Participating in "Misanthropocene" allowed me to contribute to an important dialogue about sustainability and responsibility, and I look forward to continuing to explore these themes in future projects, using art as a medium for reflection and awareness.
